Many winter breakdowns start as small problems a fall tune-up would have caught. A maintenance agreement keeps your furnace on a regular service schedule and gives you Priority Service when the weather turns cold.
Most furnace repairs are worth making. Replacement starts to make more sense when the furnace is past 15 years old, the same problems keep coming back, or one repair would cost close to half the price of a new unit. When a new furnace is the better choice, we install high efficiency Armstrong Air gas furnaces and offer financing for qualified applicants.
We proudly carry Armstrong furnaces but we are equipped to tackle any furnace repair or maintenance. We have been serving the Wabash Valley for 25 years and understand what our customers need to make their home or business comfortable during the winter months.
The most common causes are a thermostat set to cool or off or with dead batteries, a tripped breaker or furnace power switch, a clogged filter that set off a safety limit, a failed igniter or dirty flame sensor, and a blocked condensate drain on a high-efficiency furnace. If simple checks don't bring the heat back, schedule furnace diagnostics.
A short burst of cool air at start-up is normal: the blower first pushes out air that sat in the ducts. If cold air keeps coming, make sure the thermostat fan is set to AUTO, not ON, and that the filter is clean. Cold air that never warms up usually points to an ignition or gas supply problem.
Yes. A light burning-dust smell during the first hour or so of the heating season is normal, because dust that settled on the burners over the summer burns off. A smell that lingers, an electrical or burning-plastic odor, or a rotten-egg gas smell is not normal. If you smell gas, leave the house and call your gas utility from outside.
Short cycling, when the furnace turns on and off every few minutes, is usually not an immediate danger, but it is a warning sign. Common causes are a clogged filter that lets the furnace overheat, a dirty flame sensor, a thermostat problem or a furnace too big for the home. Left alone, it wears out parts and wastes gas.
It is a rule of thumb: if a repair would cost more than half the price of a new furnace, replacement is usually the better investment, especially for an older furnace. Age, repair history and efficiency matter too. Joe's Mechanical repairs any make or model and installs Armstrong Air gas furnaces, so we can walk you through both options.
