A tank is the simpler swap when an old one fails, since the new tank usually fits the same spot and connections. Tankless makes sense when you want hot water that keeps up with back-to-back showers and you plan to stay in the home long enough for the energy savings to add up.
A tank that is too small runs out of hot water, and one that is too big wastes energy keeping water hot that nobody uses. For a tank, we look at how many people live in the home, how many bathrooms you have, and whether laundry and dishes run while people shower. For tankless, the question is how many fixtures run at once and how cold the incoming water gets in winter. Replacing like for like is fine when the old tank kept up; if you kept running short of hot water, a replacement is the time to size up. Gas models recover faster after a big draw, and electric models are the answer when the home has no gas line. We size the unit with you before you buy.
At Joe's Mechanical we install A.O. Smith Water heaters. They are a brand name that you can trust and have been around since 1899! They offer a broad range of both Electric, Gas and tankless water heaters.
With their proline of water heaters they have a product that fits your needs. If you have a question about what water heater is right for you contact us and one of our water heating experts will help you find the water heating solution for you.
Size a tank water heater by how much hot water your household uses in its busiest hour, not by the number of bathrooms. As a rough guide, one or two people often do well with 30 to 40 gallons, and larger families need 50 gallons or more. A.O. Smith tanks go past 75 gallons, and we can help you choose.
Not the way a tank runs out. A tankless water heater heats water as it flows, so there is no stored supply to use up. The limit is flow: if several showers and appliances run at once, an undersized unit can fall behind. The A.O. Smith gas tankless water heaters we install are rated at 199k BTU and 10+ GPM.
A tank water heater typically lasts about 8 to 12 years, and a well-maintained tankless water heater can last 20 years or more. Hard water, sediment and skipped maintenance shorten both. The warranties reflect the difference: A.O. Smith tank water heaters carry up to a 12 year warranty, and A.O. Smith tankless units up to 15 years.
Yes, but plan on regular maintenance. Hard water leaves calcium and sediment in the heat exchanger, which cuts efficiency and can shorten the life of the unit. Our tankless maintenance includes flushing the heat exchanger to remove sediment and calcium and cleaning the inlet water filter, once a year or more often if your water conditions require it.
